Stanford Hospital & Clinics Names Amir Dan Rubin President & CEO

STANFORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Stanford Hospital & Clinics (SHC) announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Amir Dan Rubin as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 3, 2011. Currently Chief Operating Officer at the UCLA Health System in Los Angeles, California, Rubin will succeed Martha Marsh, who retired from Stanford Hospital as CEO in September 2010 after serving for eight years.

“Amir Rubin is an outstanding executive to lead Stanford Hospital at this transformative time in our history,” said SHC Board Chair Mariann Byerwalter. “His deep knowledge of academic medical centers, track record of success in developing patient-centered clinical environments, and commitment to innovation in all aspects of healthcare—including enhancing the patient experience—will be a tremendous asset as we develop the New Stanford Hospital. We were seeking a leader who recognizes the tremendous potential of this extraordinary opportunity to benefit patients here and around the world and are thrilled that Amir Rubin is becoming part of the Stanford Medicine team.”

Rubin joined UCLA in 2005, having previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital. He began his career in healthcare consulting and was based in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years.

In his role at the 832-bed UCLA Health System, Rubin has been responsible for the operations of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital, and an array of outpatient centers across the west side of Los Angeles, overseeing an operating budget of $1.6 billion and over 8,000 employees. He often arrives at 6:00 a.m. to visit patient care areas.

“We are at one of the most challenging and exciting times in science, medicine and healthcare,” said Philip Pizzo, MD, Dean of the Stanford School of Medicine. “Amir Rubin is unique among hospital leaders in possessing superb knowledge and skills that are focused on improving healthcare in a manner that puts patients and families first and foremost,” Pizzo said. “He is a highly respected, accomplished and incredibly collaborative hospital executive.”

Rubin is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and received a Master of Health Services Administration and Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and is married with two children, ages eight and ten.

“Stanford has an unparalleled group of researchers, educators, physicians, nurses, clinicians, and staff who have significantly impacted healthcare for half a century,” Rubin said. “The opportunity to join one of the world’s premier universities and academic medical centers is a great privilege and honor for me.”

“Stanford has the ability to change the face of healthcare,” he added. “To be part of an organization that can have such a broad impact on humanity is unique and truly inspiring.”

Stanford Hospital is designing a new $2.0 billion inpatient facility that will be built adjacent to the existing hospital, with construction anticipated to begin following the projected completion of the City of Palo Alto approval process in 2011.
