SPOTLIGHT: Hospitals underreport restraint-related deaths

An HHS inspector general's office report has found that many hospitals don't report deaths of patients who were restrained or put into seclusion due to behavioral problems. The law requires that hospitals must report restraint-related deaths to CMS by the close of the next business day, but only 60 of 104 deaths have been reported since 1999. Of those that were reported, a third were reported late. The report suggests hospitals that don't follow the law face sanctions. Report
