SPOTLIGHT: Baltimore man receives next-gen heart pump

Surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center said the first operation to implant a new type of heart pump in a patient was a success. The VentrAssist has only one moving part and is reputed to be far more durable than earlier generation heart pumps. Supporters say the device may offer hope for transplant patients awaiting donors.
