SCAN Health Plan Arizona Experiences Significant Growth for 2011

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SCAN Health Plan Arizona nearly doubled its membership and far exceeded enrollment projections as nearly 6,000 new members from Maricopa and Pima counties selected the nonprofit Medicare Advantage plan for 2011.

SCAN began offering a Medicare Advantage plan in Maricopa County in 2008 and recently expanded into Pima County for coverage in 2011. Currently, SCAN is affiliated with more than 8,500 primary care and specialty physicians as well as 24 acute-care hospitals and 10 specialty hospitals in Maricopa County and the greater Tucson area.

“We are very grateful for the trust our members place in us for something as important as their health and independence and also for the support of our provider community in helping us grow as we have,” said Elizabeth Russell, SCAN Arizona’s president and CEO. “That trust is something we will never take for granted, which is why we continually look for new ways to provide meaningful value to our members and other seniors in the communities we serve.”

As a leader in promoting senior health and independence, SCAN is an active community partner on many fronts, including supporting local organizations, donating time and dollars to worthwhile causes and operating the Connections Resource Center in Phoenix, which provides vital programs and classes for seniors in Maricopa County. In addition, last month the plan announced that its strong commitment to health promotion is heading “on the road” with its “Classroom in the Community” health and wellness programs to be offered at community locations and senior centers throughout Maricopa and Pima counties.

Unlike most Medicare Advantage plans, SCAN has no commercial members, thus allowing the plan to dedicate 100 percent of its energy and programs toward serving older adults across the wide spectrum of aging. Over the past five years, the health plan has experienced marked growth in its membership thanks to its reputation for member-centric services (such as live voices answering the phone), competitive benefit plans, and a commitment to looking for innovative ways to serve people on Medicare.

In 2010 SCAN was selected as one of the area’s “Best Places to Work” by the Phoenix Business Journal for the second consecutive year, one of Arizona’s Most Admired Companies by Arizona Business Magazine, and one of the nation’s top 30 “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare magazine.
