San Antonio Community Hospital Commissions Leksell Gamma Knife(R) Perfexion(TM) To Serve Over 3 Million Californians

ATLANTA, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Physicians at California's San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, will soon treat patients using the new Leksell(R) Gamma Knife Perfexion(TM). A revolutionary alternative to traditional open-brain surgery and daily radiation treatments, Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion, developed by the international medical technology group Elekta, delivers focused doses of radiation without making an incision to treat brain tumors and other brain disorders.

Developed in conjunction with US Neurosurgical, the Gamma Knife Center at San Antonio Community Hospital has received broad-based support from physicians in the community and is expected to open before the end of 2008.

"This will be the first and only Gamma Knife in the California Inland Empire, comprised of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, which is one of the fastest growing areas in California," says Alan Gold, Chairman of US Neurosurgical. "The Gamma Knife Center will bring a remarkable treatment capability to a huge marketplace of more than 3 million people that heretofore had no such option."

Gamma Knife surgery has become the world's most widely used radiosurgery treatment due to its extraordinary accuracy, reduction of excess radiation dose to the body, extensive history and clinical documentation. Unlike systems designed to treat the whole body, Leksell Gamma Knife specifically is designed to optimize treatment to the head - a fact appreciated by neurosurgeons and patients alike.

In addition, workflow with Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion is optimized for efficiency, resulting in treatments that are precise, safe and typically completed in less than an hour.

"This project was long in the making and required a great deal of study," says Gold. "Inevitably, we chose Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion because it offers the most efficient, cost effective solution for intracranial radiosurgery in the marketplace. With it, San Antonio Hospital will be able to treat more patients than ever before."
