Samaritan, founded in 1980 solely as a hospice, is now Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice to better reflect its expanded mission. Since 1980, the organization has cared for more than 50,000 patients and families.

A study released by Health Affairs in March found Medicaid beneficiaries receiving palliative care show significantly lower hospital costs while getting an extra layer of medical support. They spent less time, and were less likely to die, in an intensive care unit. The palliative care they received resulted in increased communication, care planning guidance, discharge planning and pain and symptom management.
