Rush System for Health, UnitedHealthcare Announce New Network Relationship

More than 1 million UnitedHealthcare plan participants in the greater Chicagoland area to have access to Rush System

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Rush System for Health and UnitedHealthcare have entered into a new, multiyear network relationship, giving more than 1 million UnitedHealthcare employer-sponsored and individual plan participants in the greater Chicagoland area access to the health system’s services beginning May 1. The new network relationship does not extend to UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan participants at this time.

UnitedHealthcare’s new relationship with The Rush System for Health includes Rush University Medical Center (Chicago), Rush Oak Park Hospital, Rush-Copley Medical Center (Aurora), Riverside Medical Center (Kankakee), and the physicians employed by the health system. UnitedHealthcare also entered into a new network relationship with the Rush Health physician group, which includes more than 780 physicians.

UnitedHealthcare’s care provider network in Illinois will now expand to more than 23,000 physicians and nearly 200 hospitals statewide.

“Our new partnership with Rush System for Health gives more than 1 million UnitedHealthcare plan participants greater access to quality, cost-effective health care,” said Tom Wiffler, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of Illinois & Northwest Indiana. “We look forward to working with Rush System for Health, whose name is synonymous with innovation in patient care, education and research.”

“This agreement provides UnitedHealthcare plan participants with greater choice in selecting their physicians and the hospitals they will use,” said Brent J. Estes, president and CEO of Rush Health and vice president of The Rush System for Health. “Rush offers many services and specialty resources that are not widely available in the Chicago area. We are pleased to announce this relationship with UnitedHealthcare, which will provide UnitedHealthcare employer and individual plan customers with easier access to these services and resources and provide employers and consumers with more choice in their health care purchasing decisions.”

The system’s four hospitals are:

  • Rush University Medical Center, which in January opened the Tower, a new 14-story state-of-the-art hospital building that includes 304 individual adult and critical care beds. It will have a total of 664 beds in operation in new and existing facilities. In U.S. News & World Report’s 2011 issue showcasing “America’s Best Hospitals,” Rush ranked among the top 50 hospitals in 10 of 16 categories. In 2011, Rush had 35,060 hospital admissions, 521,692 patients seen in an outpatient setting, and 362,060 physician visits.
  • Rush Oak Park Hospital, a key health care provider in the Oak Park and River Forest community for more than 100 years, offering services ranging from primary care to rehabilitation, and diabetes care to older-adult services.
  • Rush-Copley Medical Center, which provides the greater Fox Valley area with the latest in advanced heart and vascular care, cancer care, women’s health, emergency services and neuroscience.
  • Riverside Medical Center, a 336-bed hospital that provides a full scope of inpatient and outpatient care. Riverside serves the south suburban counties of Chicago as a not-for-profit medical facility, including four medical campuses in Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Coal City and Wateska.
