Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. is the first large Wisconsin employer to offer its employees health insurance through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Blue Priority.

Blue Priority is a new product from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem) built around the Aurora Accountable Care Network. Through Blue Priority, Anthem and Aurora Health Care will exchange clinical health data, co-manage patient cases, and establish quality benchmarks to enhance health outcomes for Roundy’s employees and their family members.

“Blue Priority is an important part of our ongoing work to invest in the doctor-patient relationship and improve the quality and affordability of health care in Wisconsin,” said Larry Schreiber, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. “By collaborating with Aurora, we have created a product that provides outstanding care and value for employers in a way that neither Anthem nor Aurora could have done on our own. We’re thrilled to serve Roundy’s employees and their family members and look forward to helping them maintain and improve their health.”

Roundy’s has approximately 8,000 employees and family members who live in Aurora’s Wisconsin service area. Blue Priority will provide these individuals with access to personalized, coordinated care through Aurora’s more than 1,500 physicians, 172 clinics and 15 hospitals in eastern Wisconsin. When traveling outside of Wisconsin, Roundy’s Blue Priority members will have access to any Blue Cross and Blue Shield-contracted provider at in-network rates, just as all Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield members do today.

“We look forward to serving Roundy’s employees and family members,” said Rick Klein, Aurora’s executive vice president of growth and market development. “Roundy’s selection of Blue Priority and the Aurora Accountable Care Network is a big vote of confidence in health care redesign and Aurora’s ability to deliver quality health care while controlling costs.”

Roundy’s employees will have on-site and telephone access to Aurora’s nurse case managers who can schedule primary care and specialty physician appointments, coordinate care for high-risk and chronic disease patients, develop self-management plans for patients with chronic or complex conditions and coach employees on wellness targets. This additional support is enhanced by Aurora’s systemwide electronic medical records and real-time claims analysis.

Anthony Fioretti with HNI worked with Roundy’s on its health care strategy and helped coordinate the Blue Priority agreement.

“Roundy’s leadership has been looking for a way to more effectively help its employees stay healthy,” Fioretti said. “With Blue Priority and the Aurora Accountable Care Network we can do just that. This plan brings true innovation to the market place.”

An accountable care organization model, Blue Priority and the Aurora Accountable Care Network combine to eliminate inefficiencies in health care delivery and produce real cost savings for Wisconsin employers. Exact cost savings vary by employer group, based on their funding arrangement, employee population and current provider utilization patterns, but average 10 percent. More importantly, Blue Priority and the Aurora Accountable Care network are designed to provide lower cost trends over time, as the coordinated care results in reduced health expenses.

Roundy’s will join Blue Priority effective Jan. 1, 2013.
