Particularly given the pressure on not-for-profits to prove they're making an impact, this is a good time to document the contributions hospitals make. Now, Rhode Island has quantified that contribution for 2007. The state's hospital association has concluded that its members had a $5.9 billion impact on the state's economy that year.
According to the report, the hospitals spent more than $1 billion in 2007 on supplies and services, generating $2.2 billion financial activity across the state. During that period, they also paid $1.6 billion in wages, employing 20,370 workers. This accounted for almost 5 percent of the state's employment base.
