RF Surgical Announces Three-Year Agreement with Novation

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- RF Surgical, Inc., the leader in prevention and detection of retained surgical items (RSI), today announced a three-year agreement with Novation, the industry’s leading healthcare supply contracting company. Under the terms of the agreement, Novation will provide the RF Assure™ Detection System to members of VHA Inc., UHC and Provista.

RF Surgical Detection Technology safely and accurately reads through deep cavity tissue, fluids and bone to detect if radio frequency tagged surgical sponges, gauze or towels remain in a patient following surgery, a dangerous medical error. RF Surgical Detection Technology is the first, and currently only, solution for the prevention of RSI that will be available to the more than 30,000 healthcare providers nation-wide served by Novation. Novation selected the technology following a very rigorous clinical evaluation through its New Technology Program. The Program allows Novation to work with member councils and task forces to identify and review new or innovative technology that provides an incremental clinical benefit over existing products.

“Novation’s New Technology Program is excited to help bring this type of technology – technology that reduces risk of harm to patients and raises the standard of patient care and safety – to the members we serve,” said Julie Ware, senior clinical manager, new technology, Novation.

“Implementation of RF Surgical technology is rapidly growing as healthcare providers recognize the opportunity to eliminate the dangerous, costly medical error of retained surgical items,” said Dr. Jeffrey Port, co-founder and chairman of RF Surgical. “Adjunctive technology for the prevention of retained surgical items in the operating room setting is fast becoming a ‘must have’ tool for improving patient safety. We are thrilled to be the radio frequency detection technology provider of choice for Novation, and we look forward to the opportunity that the agreement presents to meet growing demand for this patient safety solution.”
