Physicians, Hospital Receive National Awards

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- EmCare, a leading provider of facility based physician services, has presented its Commitment to Care award to Dr. Greg Byrne and its Genesis Cup award to Dr. Roman Skylar, Dr. John D’Angelo and Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. The awards were presented at EmCare’s 23rd annual Medical Directors’ Conference.

The Commitment to Care award is presented annually to one of the nearly 4,300 EmCare-affiliated physicians nationwide. The winner is determined based on his or her ability to personify the company’s values of commitment, compassion, community service and excellence in patient care.

Since joining EmCare in 1990, Dr. Byrne has developed a reputation as a physician and emergency department medical director who always goes above and beyond to help others. Today, he serves as a Regional Medical Director for EmCare and oversees emergency services provided at more than 40 hospital locations across the company’s Central Region. Recently Dr. Byrne led an initiative in an emergency department at a hospital in Texas to improve customer service and patient care. In less than a year under his leadership as medical director, Dr. Byrne transformed the staff into an effective team focused on continuous improvement.

"EmCare's unwavering commitment to quality patient care is a direct reflection of the physicians who provide it,” said Dr. Dighton Packard, EmCare Chief Medical Officer. “I am proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of this year's nominees and Dr. Greg Byrne, our Commitment to Care award recipient, and offer my personal thanks and congratulations to each of them."

Dr. Byrne is a graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical School and is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is a former president of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians and participates in a wide variety of community activities. Among them, he has served on the board of directors of the Good Shepherd Ministries of Dallas/Fort Worth and Joni & Friends Ministry. Dr. Byrne is also an avid car racer and participates in SCCA, IMSA and Corinthian Vintage Racing Association events.

In addition to Dr. Byrne, Dr. James Paul Holland, West Covina, Calif., Dr. Alfred D. Sacchetti, Camden, N. J., and Dr. Harry “Tripp” Wingate, Waynesboro, Ga., were finalists for this year’s award.

The Genesis Cup recognizes and celebrates the creativity and innovation of physicians and hospitals that implement processes or programs that improve patient care in emergency departments.

Dr. Skylar serves as the Site Medical Director at the hospital. Dr. D’Angelo is the hospital’s Associate Medical Director.

EmCare is recognizing Dr. Skylar, Dr. D’Angelo and Aventura Hospital and Medical Center of Aventura, Fla., for implementing a program that reduced the evaluation, treatment and wait times for patients admitted to the hospital’s emergency room. The successful program improved customer service and patient care and substantially increased the volume of patients Aventura Hospital and Medical Center could see in its emergency department from 2,000 patients per month to more than 4,700 patients per month over a two year period. Dr. Skylar and Dr. D’Angelo were assisted by a team of nurses, emergency room technicians, emergency medical responders, lab technicians and EmCare administrative staff.

"Congratulations to all of the great presentations for this year's Genesis Cup, most especially to the winner, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Each program would be a great addition to hospital best practices and deserves recognition in its own right. Thank you to everyone who participated and who continue to push themselves, their colleagues and their facilities to be the innovators that drive our industry forward,” said Packard.
