Philips’ SpeechMike III Boosts Antimicrobial Housing to Reduce Spread of Germs, Bacteria in Medical Facilities

Latest version of the industry’s leading wired dictation microphone is also one of the first Philips green certified products

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Philips, a leading manufacturer of mobile and stationary dictation solutions, today announced that the third-generation SpeechMike (SpeechMike III), the latest device in the industry-leading dictation microphone line, boosts an antimicrobial casing, which makes it the first and only device on the market to feature this type of surface. SpeechMike III is also one of the division’s first Philips-certified green products.

Philips developed the device’s antimicrobial surface specifically for clinical settings to help minimize the risk of spreading infections and bacteria within healthcare environments. Unlike other antimicrobial coatings, SpeechMike III’s surface is created by an additive agent being added directly to the housing material. This technique ensures the antimicrobial surface cannot be wiped away by cleaning detergents and the effects last for at least five years. Studies have also found that the antimicrobial material on the SpeechMike III can eliminate up to 99.9 percent of E. coli and M. luteus bacteria, as well as 98.4 percent of Staphylococcus aureus. It also protects against most common bacteria, viruses, fungi and algae that it may encounter in a hospital or healthcare setting.

“According to the CDC, an estimated $20 billion is spent annually in the United States to treat hospital-acquired infections,” said Wolfgang Spannlang, product manager at Philips Speech Processing. “Any effort to reduce the spread of germs and bacteria is beneficial to all parts of the healthcare system – not only will it help decrease the number of people who acquire an infection while at the hospital, but it will also help lower costs for healthcare organizations. This was the main focus behind designing the antimicrobial casing for SpeechMike III.”

SpeechMike III is also a Philips-certified green product, which means that its carbon footprint is 28 percent smaller than its predecessor. Additionally, it weighs 16 percent less and its energy consumption is 43 percent lower. SpeechMike III also comes in 51 percent less packaging material than previous models.

In addition to the unique antimicrobial casing and environmentally-friendly features, the SpeechMike III continues to be the industry’s leading wired dictation microphone with numerous high-quality performance technologies, including:

  • Noise-reduction technology to almost completely eliminate noise interference, which results in an improvement in the accuracy of voice recognition systems.
  • More ergonomically designed elements to help users more easily dictate in any environment.
  • An integrated LED indicator to show users the current recording status in different color so users can avoid errors in post-correction of a voice recording.
