Pharmacists Speak Out on Issue of Patient Adherence and Compliance

Informing the Drug Development and Commercialization Industry

CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Industry Standard Research (ISR) today announced the release of a new report titled “Adherence and Compliance: The Pharmacist’s View” in which 86 US-based retail (non-hospital based) pharmacists provided significant insights on the issues surrounding patient adherence and compliance.

“When you talk about adherence and compliance, you must take the pharmacist into account. They are on the front lines so they are inevitably going to be a major player and should be at the direct center of nearly all adherence and compliance initiatives.” explained Andrew Schafer, President of Industry Standard Research.

The report addresses many facets of the adherence and compliance issue, including Pharmacists’ drivers for improving adherence, evaluation of current adherence programs, and suggestions for improving adherence.

“The pharmacists that we spoke with were very open in giving detailed descriptions of their working environment, the barriers they face implementing adherence programs, and suggestions for how they would improve practices. Our research found that 95% indicated that they would like access to patients’ clinical/medical data to ensure appropriate care is given.”

While pharmacists may seem enthusiastic about improving adherence and compliance, they do face a number of barriers.

“One thing that has come to light through our research was the disproportionate number of pharmacists who indicated that they were not incentivized to promote adherence, compliance, or refills. On top of that, those who would benefit the most from such programs, pharmaceutical manufacturers and managed care organizations, have shown less than satisfactory performance in providing pharmacists with necessary information and materials when a program is in place.”
