Pelosi Statement on 'Cover the Uninsured Week'

WASHINGTON, April 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement in observance of "Cover the Uninsured Week."

"'Cover the Uninsured Week' is a time to reaffirm our commitment to access to quality, affordable health care for every American, including the 47 million who live in fear of even a minor illness because they lack health insurance.

"The New Direction Congress has made health care access a top priority, particularly for the millions children who are without coverage today. We passed legislation that would have provided health insurance to 10 million children, only to see the bill vetoed repeatedly by President Bush. We will not waver in our commitment to see this legislation signed into law -- if not by this President, then by the next.

"In the wealthiest nation on earth, it is scandalous that a single working American or a young child must face life without the economic security of health care coverage. In these difficult economic times, when families are struggling with the high cost of gasoline, groceries, and college, the President should work with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to make health care accessible and affordable for American families."
