CHICAGO and BINGHAMTON, N.Y., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, a 270-bed Catholic not-for-profit hospital located in New York's Southern Tier area, selected the Allscripts Electronic Health Record (EHR) solution to connect and automate their 16 employed medical groups, enhancing their ability to deliver quality patient care.

Lourdes is a member of Ascension Health, the nation's largest Catholic and non-profit health system, and the third-largest system (based on revenues) in the United States.  Designated a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Lourdes is one of only 18 New York hospitals to receive the distinguished recognition.

"We want our physicians to practice medicine with the most clinically relevant information and best practices at their fingertips, and our partnership with Allscripts continues our focus on providing state-of-the-art patient services including care of the poor and disenfranchised," said John L. Laliberte, Chief Information Officer of Lourdes. "Allscripts is an excellent partner with a strong vision whose EHR, importantly, has been successfully integrated with inpatient information systems like the one we operate, enabling caregivers inside and outside the hospital to share a common view of patient information."

The Allscripts Electronic Health Record will enable Lourdes-employed physicians to automate everyday clinical functions such as writing prescriptions, documenting patient visits and sending notes and tasks to their clinical support team. The Web-based solution will share information with the Cerner inpatient information systems used by Lourdes, bridging common gaps between inpatient and outpatient care.

Lourdes will deliver the Allscripts solution via the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud-based model, freeing physicians in smaller practices from the need to manage software and hardware issues and allowing for a faster implementation.

Allscripts Helps Physicians Demonstrate "Meaningful Use" of EHR

While improved patient care was the primary motivation for Lourdes' decision to implement an EHR, Laliberte said the hospital also expects that the Allscripts solution will help Lourdes physicians qualify for a maximum of between $44,000 and $64,000 each in federal incentives for EHR adoption.  Physicians who demonstrate "meaningful use" of an EHR can qualify for the Medicare incentive payments beginning in 2011 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Additionally, Lourdes will implement Allscripts Remote, which provides remote access to the Electronic Health Record via Apple iPhone™, iPod touch® and iPad™, as well as BlackBerry®, Android™ or Windows Mobile smartphones. Using Allscripts Remote, Lourdes physicians can safely and securely make critical medical decisions when they are away from the office, with all relevant information available on the one device they keep closest.

"Lourdes is a clear leader among healthcare organizations, both in the Southern Tier and nationally, and one common theme among those leading organizations is the use of electronic health records to improve care," said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. "Lourdes will benefit from Allscripts' ability not only to deliver our EHR via the cloud but to include innovations like Remote that make it easier for physicians to practice medicine anywhere, anytime. This is a clear win for physicians, caregivers, and the patients they serve."

About Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has as many faces as there are people in the community it serves. With its spiritual Catholic faith, Lourdes has provided compassionate care to those in need since 1925.

In Binghamton, NY, the main hospital campus includes a Hospice Program, an Ambulatory Surgery Center, and a Regional Cancer Center. Reaching beyond these boundaries, Lourdes has established a network of primary care physicians at convenient sites throughout the region. The Mission In Motion program, which provides primary care and cancer screening services through two mobile medical vans, makes health care accessible to rural populations.

Lourdes earned its reputation for quality health care through the dedication and commitment of the people who provide those services day in and day out, 365 days a year, in communities throughout the Southern Tier.
