Not-for-profit hospital CEOs average $490,431 per year

Not-for-profits paid their CEOs an average of $490,431 in total compensation per year in 2006, according to a new report from the IRS. According to the survey, which tallied responses from about 500 tax-exempt hospitals, the average CEO salary was $408,927, for which the median top compensation was $377,256 and the median top salary was $323,858.

The study also looked at community benefits provided by the not-for-profits, concluding that a small handful of hospitals provided the majority of charitable care. According to IRS stats, about 60 percent of uncompensated care was provided by 14 percent of hospitals, and 60 percent of community benefit spending was done by 9 percent of hospitals.

In addition, it found that uncompensated care as a percentage of total hospital revenue averaged 7 percent, and community benefit 9 percent of total revenue.
