and brought cheer in the form of 210 big green boxes to children fighting childhood cancer and other diseases at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital during its “Cheeriodicals Day” event held on March 29, 2013. Cheeriodicals are “big green boxes of cheer” made up, in this case, of age-appropriate magazines, toys, puzzles, crafts and more goodies for the children to enjoy.

“We are so excited to have Northwestern Mutual and Cheeriodicals visit Children’s today,” said Jackie Johnstone, Coordinator, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We sincerely appreciate Northwestern Mutual Managing Partner Kevin Lawhon for sponsoring this day of smiles. All of our patients were thrilled to receive such special and fun gifts.”

“We’re excited to work with Northwestern Mutual to bring smiles to each child at Joe DiMaggio Children’s,” said Gary Parisher, President of Cheeriodicals. “As this is the 5 Cheeriodicals Day sponsored by Northwestern Mutual, we’ve seen firsthand Northwestern Mutual’s amazing commitment to giving back to their community. We are excited that they’ve chosen to include Cheeriodicals in their efforts.”

Cheeriodicals and an enthusiastic team from Northwestern Mutual began passing out the cheer-up boxes at 9:30 am to the children. The cheer-up boxes not only delighted the children, but also held a special surprise for some of the parents. The Cheeriodicals designed for the infants included copies of the board book donated by the author, Sandra Boynton, with each copy signed by her for the event.

Northwestern Mutual – The South Florida Group’s efforts are part of Northwestern Mutual’s nationwide introduced last year to both accelerate the search for a cure to childhood cancer and support kids and families who are battling the disease. In , the office donated to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Miami Children’s Hospital in Miami, and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital at Broward Health in Coral Springs.

“Happiness can heal – it accelerates a family’s fight against childhood cancer and other diseases so we’re thrilled to partner with Cheeriodicals to bring joy to Fort Lauderdale families,” said Kevin Lawhon, managing partner, Northwestern Mutual – The South Florida Group. “As a father of three daughters, I can tell you a sick child is something that can make your heart ache, but I can’t imagine the emotional toll that cancer and other diseases can have on a family. Our goal was to strengthen families by alleviating some of the stress accompanying their experience – and give them a little bit of fun.”

Cheeriodicals Day is catching on across the country. Cheeriodicals recently worked with children’s hospitals in Memphis, Atlanta, New Orleans, St. Louis and Birmingham on their Cheeriodicals Days, and has already scheduled several more Cheeriodicals Days throughout the country.
