Nix Health Care System Rated 5-Star for Bariatric Surgery Four Years in a Row

Nix is the Only Facility in the San Antonio-Austin Area* to Receive 5-Star Rating for Weight Loss Surgery

SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nix Health Care System was rated 5-Star for the fourth year in a row (2010/2011, 2009/2010, 2008/2009, 2007/2008) for bariatric surgery excellence according to a new study issued today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Based on this ranking, the Nix is the only facility in the San Antonio-Austin area* to receive the 2010/2011 5-Star rating from HealthGrades. In addition, Nix was ranked “Top 10 in Texas” and “Top 15% in the Nation” for overall bariatric surgery.

“Bariatric Surgeons, Dr. Keith Wright and Dr. Gerardo Cárcamo**, along with the Nix staff have played an instrumental role in the Nix Weight Loss Surgery Center receiving this designation of excellence for the fourth year in a row,” said John F. Strieby, CEO and Chairman of the Board. “This recognition is another reason why patients choose the Nix. We continuously offer a higher level of personal care, the latest technology and finest physicians.”

According to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, an average of 63.9% of adult Texans were overweight or obese in 2005 and this number continues to grow. In fact, from 1990 to 2005, the number of obese people in Texas increased 119.5%.

Bariatric surgery can produce dramatic weight loss among the morbidly obese, who comprise about 5% of the national population according to the Centers for Disease Control. In many cases, individuals undergoing the procedure lose the equivalent of one-third of their body weight or more. Bariatric surgery has also been shown, in the morbidly obese, to significantly improve or cure a variety of major health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

Nix Health Care System and other top-performing hospitals in bariatric surgery had 43% fewer complications, on average, than hospitals performing at an average level, according to the HealthGrades study. Of the 73 hospitals rated by HealthGrades in Texas, Nix was one of only 12 to be 5-Star rated. Nationally, HealthGrades rated 481 hospitals and only 19% earned the 5-Star recognition.

“This study shows, quite dramatically, that for bariatric surgery, it is important for patients to evaluate hospitals using objective information as they make their choice,” said Rick May, MD, a vice president with HealthGrades and a co-author of the study.
