New England Sinai Hospital to Join Steward Health Care

Long-Term Care Facility Essential Service for Steward Accountable Care Organization

STOUGHTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- New England Sinai today announced that its Board of Trustees has voted to enter into an asset purchase agreement to be acquired by Steward Health Care System LLC. (Steward), the largest community-based accountable care organization in New England. New England Sinai launched a search for a clinical and business partner a year ago, recognizing that the healthcare environment was increasingly difficult for an independent long-term acute care hospital. The transaction is subject to review by the Department of Health and the Attorney General’s Office.

“Steward has a strong track record of investing substantial resources toward community health needs and expanding access to quality programs and services,” said Judy Waterston, President and CEO of New England Sinai. “By joining Steward’s integrated system of 10 community hospitals, Sinai will be able to thrive and succeed for the long-term.”

Steward’s health care model integrates physicians and caregivers to provide high quality, efficient care for patients throughout the health care continuum. This integration improves wellness and lowers health care costs through better management of chronic diseases, reduces medical errors and eliminates duplicative and unnecessary testing.

“Post-acute care is a highly utilized health care service that can reduce costs by keeping patients out of acute care hospitals when they do not require that level of care,” said Ralph de la Torre, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Steward. “By adding New England Sinai to the Steward physician and hospital network, our patients will benefit from having enhanced access to a post-acute care solution that is fully integrated with our hospitals and physicians.”
