National consulting, planning, and engineering firm Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch (Mazzetti) will engage GL Envision, a subsidiary of Gundersen Health System to provide sustainability strategy consulting services to select clients. The combined service offerings will assist healthcare organizations by helping them implement strategies that reduce costs; set and achieve targeted sustainability goals related to energy, water and waste; and improve their overall environmental footprint. These strategies can be used throughout all foundational, operational and functional levels of the organization.

With hospitals and clinics in 19 counties and three states, Gundersen Health System understands the unique challenges of sustainability in healthcare, and is leading by example. In 2008, Gundersen Health System developed a plan to become energy independent by 2014 through energy efficiency improvements and creating renewable energy resources. Gundersen has made significant progress in achieving those goals. Evidence of their success includes saving more than $1 million in energy costs as a result of energy efficiency improvements, as well as successfully implementing several large, solar, biogas and wind energy projects.

“We improved our energy efficiency by 25 percent in the first two years of our Envision® program and have gained significant experience implementing renewable energy projects,” says Jeff Rich, Executive Director of GL Envision. “Now we want to help other healthcare organizations achieve similar success. We’ve developed services through our GL Envision program to help other healthcare organizations get started.”

Mazzetti has spent decades helping healthcare organizations better plan, finance, and implement projects to manage their energy consumption. Through involvement with key organizations, leadership at Mazzetti has participated in assisting and developing nearly every code, regulation and standard in the healthcare industry, particularly those related to sustainability. The firm continually works to lead the industry towards a much deeper, broader view of the ways healthcare systems can improve their environmental performance. Mazzetti has greatly enhanced their ability to provide strategic sustainability consulting services that integrate sustainability with other elements of an organization’s business strategy. Combining Mazzetti’s planning, building infrastructure, project delivery knowledge and experience; and Gundersen Health System’s proven track record for environmental success, this service arrangement will provide a new, more complete range of sustainability services for the healthcare industry.

“My goal has always been to find the best ways to help our clients achieve their goals, and the opportunity for us to add the experience of Gundersen to our own creates an unbeatable set of resources,” said Mazzetti CEO, Walt Vernon. “Our vision as a company is to make the world a better place by creating better environments, and I am really excited about this new opportunity to help our healthcare clients.”
