Marshfield Clinic Joins Premier Healthcare Alliance to Reduce Healthcare Costs, Improve Efficiencies

One of the Largest Private Group Medical Practices in Wisconsin to Have Access to Nation’s Most Comprehensive Healthcare Data, Best Practices from National Quality and Cost Improvement Collaboratives

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Marshfield Clinic, one of the largest private group medical practices in Wisconsin and in the United States, has joined the Premier healthcare alliance.

Through this partnership, the clinic will be able to benchmark its performance and collaborate with 2,300 of the nation's hospitals and clinics to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety, enhance efficiencies and reduce overall costs.

As an owner of Premier, the clinic will have access to the nation's most comprehensive repository of clinical, financial and outcomes information, as well as Premier’s market-leading purchasing network.

“Our Premier partnership allows access to programs and best practice sharing that can help improve overall quality and cost-effectiveness of care we provide in our communities,” said Marshfield President and CEO Karl J. Ulrich, M.D., M.M.M. “With access to fully integrated data on outcomes, costs, use and quality, we can work with other leading health systems to track our performance, share knowledge about what works and set achievable targets for continuous improvement.”

Designated as a national model for healthcare reform, Marshfield Clinic is one of only 10 sites in the United States selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to participate in a physician group practice (PGP) demonstration project. Marshfield Clinic physicians and other medical professionals provide patient care in 86 specialties such as neuro-oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, pediatric orthopedic surgery and electrophysiology. The clinic system includes the Biomedical Informatics Research Center (www.marshfieldclinic.org/birc), which is meant to accelerate improvements in human health and well-being through informatics research while providing integrated tools, services and reliable management of information assets in support of Marshfield Clinic missions.

“Marshfield Clinic is a truly innovative care provider and its ownership in Premier will benefit the entire alliance as we take on the challenge of improving healthcare quality and cost-effectiveness,” said Susan DeVore, president and CEO of Premier. “Through this partnership, we will work together to safely lower the cost of quality products and services to further enhance the clinic’s ability to deliver high quality care to the patients they serve.”

According to Premier Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Blair Childs, “Premier member hospitals around the nation have come together to take on the challenges of improving the quality and cost of care. Hospitals and clinics have to act now and push for improvements, and that’s what being a member of Premier is about – making changes to advance healthcare. Marshfield is a care provider leading the way for this type of change in our country.”
