Joel Buchwald Featured Speaker at Pathways Hospice 21st Annual One from the Heart Awards Breakfast

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Television journalist and producer Joel Buchwald, son of Art Buchwald, will be this year’s featured speaker at the 21st One from the Heart Awards Breakfast. A fundraiser for Pathways Home Health & Hospice, the One from the Heart Awards breakfast is scheduled for October 6, 2011, 7:30-9:30 am, at Crowne Plaza Cabaña Hotel in Palo Alto, California and attracts more than 600 community leaders, medical professionals and philanthropists annually. Emmy and Peabody Award winner Rita Williams of KTVU Channel 2 is returning for her 12th year as host of the event.

Buchwald will share the wit and wisdom of his father, Art Buchwald, a Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist who passed away in 2007. He will share stories about his father, an American humorist with a long-running national newspaper column. At age 80, Art was told he had only a few weeks to live. He made national news announcing that he would spend his final days in a local hospice where, instead of dying, he flourished. Celebrities and dignitaries flocked to visit Art, who even wrote a book about his experiences. Art’s final months were spent with Joel, who learned what is truly important in life from caring for both of his parents at the end of their lives.

In addition to the featured speaker, a highlight of the One from the Heart Awards Breakfast is the honoring of individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to hospice care, philanthropy, and volunteerism. Three awards given: The John W. Gardner Visionary Award, which recognizes the work of those individuals who strengthen regional or national commitment to healthcare or philanthropy; The Frances C. Arrillaga Humanitarian Award which celebrates volunteerism and regional philanthropy; and the One from the Heart Award which honors enduring contributions to Pathways hospice patients and families.
