IPC The Hospitalist Company Physician Named MGMA and ACMPE Physician Executive of the Year Second Year in a Row

Dr. David Bowman Honored in Las Vegas Ceremony

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IPC The Hospitalist Company, Inc., (Nasdaq: IPCM), a leading national hospitalist physician group practice company, announced that David Bowman, M.D., has received the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) “Physician Executive of the Year” award for 2011. This is the second consecutive year that an IPC physician has been so honored. Last year, IPC CEO and Chairman Adam Singer, M.D. received the award.

Dr. Bowman, IPC’s Executive Director in Tucson, was presented the Physician Executive of the Year Award at the MGMA Annual Conference in Las Vegas on October 25, 2011. The award recognizes a physician executive in a medical group practice who has exhibited outstanding leadership to achieve exceptional performance in the delivery of healthcare in his or her practice and community through personal example and collaborative team management.

Beginning in 2000 with a handful of physicians, Dr. Bowman has grown the IPC hospitalist group in Tucson to more than 75 affiliated providers. The key to his success as a leader lies in his belief that teamwork between the hospital and hospitalists is essential. In addition to cultivating loyalty, cooperation and enthusiasm, Dr. Bowman has made it a priority to encourage all the full-time hospitalists reporting to him to join at least one hospital committee. As a result, 100 percent of Dr. Bowman’s acute care providers with more than one year of seniority are members of at least one committee at their hospital; many are on three or more committees and some have been appointed Chief of Staff.

Dr. Bowman also played a pivotal role in helping the victims of the Tucson, Arizona shooting last January that seriously wounded U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and killed six others. As the first physician on the scene, he used his medical skills and leadership to triage the shooting victims, providing lifesaving care until the paramedics arrived. Upon their arrival, he directed the paramedics to those most critical, including the first person he helped, who happened to be Rep. Giffords.

“Dr. Bowman’s recognition as ‘Physician Executive of the Year’ from the MGMA is well-deserved,” said Adam Singer, M.D., IPC CEO and chairman. “The award acknowledges his exceptional contributions to medical group practices that come from dedication, experience, hard work, and talent. He is a hands-on manager who embodies the qualities that we at IPC look for in our physician leaders. And, he has demonstrated that an independent physician practice can be an invaluable partner to the hospital and still maintain the highest standards of high-quality clinical inpatient care.”
