ICA Unveils User-Friendly Patient Portal Product: A First for the Health Information Exchange Community

Visit ICA at HIMSS11: Orlando, Fla., Feb 20 - 24, 2011, Booth # 2837

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Informatics Corporation of America (ICA), a leading provider of comprehensive Health Information Exchange (HIE) solutions to hospitals, integrated delivery networks (IDNs), communities and states, launches its innovative patient portal product at HIMSS11 Exhibition in Booth # 2837, February 20-24, 2011, Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Fla. Meeting the strict standards of Meaningful Use, the product offers several unique features that include a monthly calendar with a simplified, user-friendly layout of patient visits; lab results, including medications, medical conditions, and visit summaries; a messaging component that allows direct communication between patient and physician; and educational content offering disease-specific information based upon a patient’s diagnosis.

“Our patient portal further establishes ICA as the preeminent provider of patient-friendly technology for the HIE setting,” says John Tempesco, chief marketing officer, ICA. “Ultimately, the patient portal will integrate with personal health records (PHRs), allowing patients to order refills, reschedule appointments, and give proxy access to their spouses. As HIEs continue to become the dominant model for sharing clinical patient health data, it’s important that the technology provides simple, convenient access to data across multiple settings.”

The patient portal is accessible from all browsers, enabling patients to view their medical data anytime and from anywhere with Internet connectivity. Patients have the ability to make simple annotations, although they are unable to delete or change information in their files.

“For example, if patients suffer an adverse reaction to a medication or if they only take half of a prescribed dose, they can add this to their record so that the physician can adjust the medications accordingly,” explains Tempesco.

Additionally, the patient portal includes three data availability categories: immediate, delayed, and restricted. Certain results are delayed for a number of days, giving the physician time to review and discuss the results with the patient prior to entering the information into the patient portal. Other results are restricted, based upon facility policies or legal requirements to maintain confidentiality of certain health care data.

“The emergence of the patient-centered medical home and an increased focus on patient-centric care heightens the need for this portal – now and into the future,” he says.
