Humana’s Corporate Building Earns Environmental Protection Agency’s Top Recognition for Energy Efficiency

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that it has earned the distinguished ENERGY STAR certification for its headquarters building in Louisville, KY. The ENERGY STAR rating, granted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy, is the designation for buildings that have superior energy performance and improve the quality of the environment. This designation signifies that Humana’s headquarters performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency.

“Humana is one of the first Fortune 500 companies in the Commonwealth to earn the ENERGY STAR rating, proving the company’s commitment to energy efficiency and a healthier workplace for its employees,” said Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear. “The Governor and I commend Humana for earning this certification and hope that other companies in Kentucky will follow their lead in environmental and social responsibility.”

“I applaud Humana for its ENERGY STAR designation. This is a great example of a local company leading the way in energy efficiency,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “This not only makes Humana a more green company, it makes Louisville a greener city – and it saves green, too, with lower energy costs for the company.”

Humana’s energy milestone underscores the company’s overarching corporate social responsibility commitment Healthy People, Healthy Planet, Healthy Performance, which looks to improve communities through social, environmental and governance-related programs.

“As one of the nation’s leading health benefits companies, Humana strives to ensure that every business decision we make reflects our commitment to improve the health and well-being of our members, our associates, the communities we serve and our planet,” said Mike McCallister, Humana’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Humana commits to making the planet a healthier place, and all these initiatives are great examples of the meaningful actions we are taking to drive environmental sustainability forward.”

To further underscore its environmental commitment, Humana will for the first time participate in the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps Program. This summer, an EDF graduate “fellow” will be embedded into Humana’s headquarters to uncover additional efficiency opportunities in the company’s data centers.

Other Healthy Planet initiatives include supporting community bike-sharing programs; participating in the Business Roundtable’s Climate Resolve program and the Carbon Disclosure Project; engaging employees in volunteerism and activities that encourage environmental stewardship; as well as building other ENERGY STAR and LEED-certified locations.

According to the EPA, ENERGY STAR buildings like Humana’s corporate headquarters have prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to the emissions from the energy use of nearly 1.3 million homes a year, protecting people’s health, while saving more than $1.9 billion.

About ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings. Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved nearly $17 billion on their energy bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 30 million vehicles.
