Hospira Sponsors Practice Greenhealth Greening the OR Initiative

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hospira, Inc. has joined the group of corporate sponsors of the Practice Greenhealth Greening the OR Initiative. This sweeping and prescriptive path to green the nation’s operating rooms is being led by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for institutions in healthcare that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

Hospira is a global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company dedicated to Advancing Wellness™. As the world leader in specialty generic injectable pharmaceuticals, Hospira offers one of the broadest portfolios of generic acute-care and oncology injectables, as well as integrated infusion therapy and medication management solutions.

The Greening the OR Initiative is examining a range of interventions that will not only reduce the environmental impact of the OR, but also potentially reduce cost, increase quality and improve worker or patient safety. Over the next year, a collaborative group of forward-thinking hospitals, health care industry leaders, manufacturers and vendors, and sponsors participating in the Greening the OR Initiative, will participate in the development of a series of Greening the OR Best Practices Guidance Documents, including case studies and implementation recommendations addressing these and other related areas.

Operating rooms are some of the most resource-intensive and waste generating places in a hospital, generating between 20 and 30 percent of a facility’s waste. Much of that waste is disposed of as regulated medical waste, which costs 10 to 15 times more in disposal fees than regular waste. Half of budgets for operating rooms are generally spent on supplies that are thrown out, being used once or not at all during procedures, even though re-use may be an option. Likewise, it is a huge cost-center for materials, devices and supplies.

"Hospitals have been taking a serious look at their overall operations to see where they can become more environmentally friendly, and we're excited about partnerships like these that can drive success across the healthcare continuum," said Thomas Moore, president, U.S., Hospira. "Practice Greenhealth is at the forefront in encouraging green practices in healthcare, and by working with them on Greening the OR, we hope to find ways to cut down on waste and encourage greater environmental sustainability."

“Hospira’s commitment to support the Greening the OR Initiative is a clear demonstration of their ongoing corporate commitment to environmental sustainability and their recognition of the considerable benefits of “going green” in the operating room. These include reductions in energy and water use, a reduction in staff exposure to toxic chemicals, increased patient and staff safety, and a much-reduced impact on the environment,” said Bob Jarboe, Executive Vice President of Business Development for Practice Greenhealth.

Other sponsoring organizations for the initiative are Ascent Healthcare Solutions, HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) and SRI Surgical.
