HealthSouth hospitals subpoenaed by HHS

Four hospitals owned by HealthSouth Corporation have been hit with subpoenas from the HHS Office of Inspector General in Miami Lakes, Fla., according to a report the corporation filed yesterday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Federal investigators are looking into the hospitals' billing practices, investigating whether they summited improper or fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid, Reuters reported.

The Miami Lakes OIG asked Alabama-based HealthSouth for materials related to marketing functions, pre-admission screening, post-admission physician evaluations, patient assessment instruments and individualized patient care plans. The subpoenas also ask for copies of medical records for 100 patients treated at each of the four hospitals between September 2008 and June 2012. Article
