HealthPort is First to Complete Connectivity Testing in CMS esMD Gateway Pilot Program

ALPHARETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HealthPort, the industry authority on the HIPAA-compliant exchange of protected health information through release of information services and audit management technology, today announced its successful completion of phase one connectivity testing as part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) pilot electronic submission of medical documentation (esMD) gateway services program for information exchange from healthcare providers.

HealthPort is the largest health information handler (HIH) approved to participate in the test phase and the first to complete phase one proving HealthPort’s connectivity is fully operational with the esMD gateway. “We have dedicated a large amount of resources, time and focus to aiding in healthcare’s electronic vision, and the completion of esMD’s HIH connectivity testing puts us closer to offering healthcare providers an innovative and streamlined electronic option for responding to governmental medical record requests,” said Gene Guertin, Chief Information Officer, HealthPort. As a participant, HealthPort will utilize its technology for the secure electronic transmittal of medical record requests by Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) and other federal Medicare and Medicaid related audit requesters via the CMS esMD gateway, allowing providers the option to respond to documentation requests through electronic data submissions rather than by paper or CDs.

HealthPort will now enter phase two of the esMD pilot program testing which involves sending data through the esMD gateway for CMS and RACs. The esMD gateway services program is expected to launch later this year. “As the largest release of information services provider in the country and the largest HIH selected to participate in the esMD pilot program, being the first to advance to the next stage of the program puts us on the cutting edge of transforming release of information into a completely electronic process,” says Guertin. “A logical next step for our company and the healthcare industry.”
