HealthPartners among top five performing health plans nationally in National Business Coalition on Health’s eValue8 rating

DIAMOND program cited by NBCH for its innovated care model for patients with depression

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HealthPartners was named as one of the nation’s five top performing health plans in a report sponsored by the National Business Coalition on Health. In addition, HealthPartners was the top-rated plan in 10 of the 14 categories established by the NBCH in its eValue8 rankings.

The NBCH evaluated 64 health plans across the nation which serve more than 100 million Americans. The eValue8 process was established to help purchasers buy health care products and services while controlling costs and ensuring top quality care.

HealthPartners was the only Minnesota health plan to receive a top five citation from NBCH, joining CIGNA New York, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Kaiser Permanente Southern California.

“This recognition from the business community reinforces that the real health care reform that HealthPartners is undertaking is on the mark,” said Mary Brainerd, HealthPartners president and CEO. “We believe that we can put our members and patients first while changing how we deliver care and lowering costs at the same time.”

For PPO plans, HealthPartners ranked first nationally in plan profile, consumer engagement, provider measurement, pharmaceutical management, prevention and health promotion and behavioral health while ranking second in chronic disease management.

HealthPartners had the top rated HMO plan for plan profile, consumer engagement, provider measurement and behavioral health. The HMO plan ranked second in pharmaceutical management, prevention and health promotion and chronic disease management.

No other health plan ranked first nationally in 2010 in as many PPO or HMO categories. This was the fourth consecutive year in which HealthPartners had more first-place PPO category rankings than any other plan in the eValue8 rankings. The HealthPartners HMO has ranked first in more categories than any other plan in three of the past four years.

“To truly reform the U.S. health care system requires a triple aim approach: improve health, improve health care and lower costs,” said Andrew Webber, president and CEO, NBCH. “To accomplish this it’s critical to have a strong interaction between the health care purchasers and their health plans. The collaboration and discussion that takes place as part of eValue8 plays a vital role in efforts to improve quality and cost.”

HealthPartners was also honored with a with a 2010 eValue8 Innovation Award for its work on DIAMOND (Depression Improvement Across Minnesota, Offering a New Direction), a statewide effort to improve health care for people with depression that compensates providers for extra patient education and monitoring. HealthPartners shared the Innovation Award with Golden Valley-based PreferredOne.

The enhanced care for patients with depression led to at least five times as many patients in the DIAMOND program being in remission after six months compared to clinics offering typical primary care treatment. DIAMOND is currently offered at eight HealthPartners clinics.

“As a participant in all aspects of the DIAMOND pilot – through our health plan, our clinics and our research foundation – HealthPartners saw the program as an opportunity to transform depression care,” said Babette Apland, HealthPartners senior vice president for Health and Care Management. “The model of team-based care is demonstrating effectiveness in meeting individual patient needs and the percentage of patients who enjoyed substantial improvement is very encouraging.”
