PROVIDERS WILL INCREASINGLY FAVOR ON-PREMISE VENDOR SOLUTIONS OVER CUSTOM IN-HOUSE AND HOSTED VENDOR SOLUTIONS, AND SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASE THEIR COMMITMENTS TO OUTSOURCERS.

CONCORD, Mass., January 8, 2008 — Gantry Group, LLC recently completed its annual study, Provider Clinical Technology Expenditures 2007, to ascertain hospital executives’ investment plans over the next 12 months. Providers will broaden and deepen their adoption of clinical technology across all major clinical solution categories over the next year. Providers are making significant investments in clinical technology, with nearly half allocating 40% or more of their current technology budget to these solutions. The study concludes that by the end of 2008, over 80% of provider facilities will be invested in:

  • Digital medical imaging
  • Medication management/ ePrescriptioning
  • RFID patient identification/drug distribution
  • EMR/EHR
  • Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE)
  • Mobile applications (e.g. charge capture, rounding, prescriptions)
  • Patient documentation
  • Patient care planning solutions

For all clinical applications, providers will increasingly and rapidly adopt on-premise vendor solutions over the next 12 months. In general, providers will move away from custom in-house solutions and hosted (ASP) vendor solutions, and drastically decrease their commitments to outsourcers.

Executives from 43 hospitals participated in this study, comprised of CEOs (8%), CFOs (8%), CIO/CTOs (12%), VP Nursing (9%) and VP/Director Case Management (18%). Healthcare facilities of all sizes were represented in the study, ranging from 150 to over 1,000 beds. Study response was predominately drawn from hospital systems (49%) and independent hospitals (34%).The study revealed the following additional top level findings:

  • Over 50% of providers participating in this study spend over $10M annually on healthcare technology, rising to 53% over the next 12 months.
  • On average, Digital Medical Imaging & EMR/EHR together command 64% of providers’ clinical technology budget.
  • Investment in clinical solutions is driven primarily by the need for providers to make improvements in patient safety & care outcomes, as well as reduce medical & medication errors.
  • Executive Management is the primary decision-maker (94%) for clinical technology.
  • Driven by the desire to quickly deploy the solution (64%), approximately 75% of providers plan to increase their commitment to vendors’ clinical solutions rather than developing custom solutions in-house.
