Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is the #1 private health plan in America again according to an annual ranking of the nation’s best health plans by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).Harvard Pilgrim is the only private health plan in the nation to be named #1 for member satisfaction and quality of care for nine consecutive years. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England, Harvard Pilgrim’s New Hampshire affiliate, is the top-ranked plan in New Hampshire.

Rankings are based on clinical quality as measured by The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), a tool developed by NCQA to enable purchasers and consumers to make reliable comparisons of health care plan performance. Other measures used to score health plans for NCQA’s rankings include the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) and NCQA’s accreditation standards ratings.

“Harvard Pilgrim continues to top the nation’s best health plan rankings because of the quality of our clinical programs and our extraordinary customer service,” said Eric Schultz, president and chief executive officer of Harvard Pilgrim. ”We work closely with our health care providers to ensure excellence and to bring value for our members.”

Schultz added that Harvard Pilgrim was founded by physicians more than 40 years ago and continues to have physicians, nurses and other clinicians actively involved in leading the non-profit health plan. “We are committed to encouraging exceptional patient/physician relationships and offering product innovations to address the many challenges faced by patients and providers today,” said Schultz.

“We are very proud of the broad network of Harvard Pilgrim doctors and hospitals across the three states we serve,” said Michael Sherman, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Harvard Pilgrim. They have been committed partners in improving member care. We look forward to continuing our work together in innovative ways to benefit our members and employers.”

Harvard Pilgrim builds upon the solid relationships it has established with doctors and hospitals throughout the years by continuing to reward innovation and excellence with pay-for-performance, quality grants and physician and hospital honor roll programs. Both parties bring their respective strengths to the table to do what’s best for their members/patients, while addressing health care affordability and the total cost of care.
