- Dr. Peter Angood, Former Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at the National Quality Forum becomes GE’s PSO Medical Director

BARRINGTON, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- GE Healthcare Performance Solutions today announces the appointment of Dr. Peter Angood as the Medical Director of the GE Patient Safety Organization (PSO). Dr. Angood is the former Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at the National Quality Forum (NQF). The GE PSO was recently certified as part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Patient Safety Organization program.
Dr. Angood is a renowned expert in patient safety who has previously had roles with The Joint Commission, Joint Commission International, the World Health Organization and numerous professional societies – including President for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Angood continues with NQF as a part-time consultant to help guide projects focused on improving national patient safety and healthcare quality. As Medical Director, Dr. Angood will provide expert advice on strategic direction and future growth for the GE PSO while also providing skilled insights on the development of reports and solutions that will come from the PSO. Dr. Angood will chair the GE PSO Advisory Board.

Dr. Angood previously served as Chief Patient Safety Officer and a Vice-President for The Joint Commission where he oversaw annual development of the commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and several other enterprise-wide patient safety initiatives. Dr. Angood continues to work with the World Health Organization Patient Safety initiatives after having helped lead early development of the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions and a variety of other WHO Patient Safety programs.
Prior to joining The Joint Commission, Dr. Angood started his surgical career at McGill University and was subsequently recruited into surgery faculty and hospital administrative positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Most recently, Dr. Angood was Professor of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Angood is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada), the American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He remains engaged with research activities and has authored over 160 peer-reviewed articles, policy briefs, abstracts, editorials, and book chapters.
Dr. Angood received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Canada and completed his training in general surgery at McGill University in Montreal, as well as fellowship training in trauma surgery and critical care medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
