First Ever Health Care Milestone Reached: UnitedHealthcare Now Serves 2 Million U.S. Children in Medicaid and Related Prog

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, has achieved a milestone: 2 million children served across the country.

UnitedHealthcare Community & State is the largest Medicaid managed care company in an expanding market of Medicaid and related programs. The company improves children’s health through population-specific outreach, health education and clinical programs and expands health care access to underserved communities.

“We recognize the profound responsibility we have in serving 2 million children. We are focused on providing them and their families with access to affordable, quality care. We are making good progress in enhancing care, though there is still much work to be done to ensure all children and their families – regardless of where they live or economic status – are healthy and have access to resources in their communities to enhance their health, well-being and quality of life,” said Russell C. Petrella, Ph.D., president of UnitedHealthcare Community & State.

UnitedHealthcare community plans offer Medicaid health care coverage to children in 24 markets across the country. Coverage, which varies by state, typically includes doctor visits, hospital care (including emergency room care), immunizations, routine physical exams and prescription drug coverage. UnitedHealthcare Community & State members have access to the nation’s largest care provider network of pediatricians and children’s hospitals.

UnitedHealthcare Community & State partners with leading community-based organizations, such as National 4-H Council and Sesame Workshop, to help reach children and youth in innovative ways and empower them to live healthier lives. The company, a Sesame Street sponsor, offers A is for Asthma, an asthma-awareness program, and Lead Away!, a lead-poisoning prevention program, in partnership with Sesame Workshop. These specialized, bilingual programs for children, and many others in partnership with community-based organizations nationwide, are designed to help children and their families learn about health issues and promote positive healthy habits.
