Geisinger's Kevin Capatch, director of supply chain technology and process engineering at the Danville, PA system will share the system's blueprint for centralizing and transforming the supply chain process into an enterprise-wide, patient-centered logistics system that is improving resource and operational management in a complex healthcare organization. The seven-facility system is comprised of Geisinger Medical Center, two satellite campuses, a dependency treatment center, and three ambulatory surgery centers, plus 62 primary and specialty care sites.
Capatch will discuss the expanding role of Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) in operational improvement across multiple departments and campuses. He will also reveal innovative solutions to resolving the "Three H's" dilemma of mobile medical device management -- "Hunting, Hoarding and Hiding" -- which was costing the system nearly $600,000 annually.
Prior to re-engineering the process, 30 percent of the system's IV pumps, valued at $2,500 each, could not be found on a daily basis. This translated to $400,000 in unusable equipment and annually cost over $173,000 in nursing time and $12,000 in biomed time devoted to search for the missing devices.
