Elekta's Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion is Ranked 2011's Best in KLAS for Radiation Therapy

ATLANTA, June 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Elekta's Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ earned the number one ranking in the KLAS research firm's recently released 2011 Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards: Medical Equipment & Infrastructure* report. Perfexion received Best in KLAS in the radiation therapy category.

In the report, Perfexion scored 92.9 out of 100 and 95 percent of customers indicated they would buy again. On a 1 to 9 scale, Perfexion received an 8.6 from respondents for satisfaction with product uptime, the highest score among all vendors rated in the market segment.

"Leksell Gamma Knife has been the gold standard for radiosurgery for many years," says Jay Hoey, Executive Vice President, Elekta North America. "Our latest generation solution, Perfexion, was designed and developed based on the insight of expert Leksell Gamma Knife users. The Best in KLAS designation recognizes not only the sophistication of this radiosurgery platform, but also the contributions of our clinical partners in making it a reality."

Elekta posted record-breaking sales of Leksell Gamma Knife systems in 2010, confirming the growing demand for the system as a safe, effective modality to treat brain metastases and other cranial disorders.

Gamma Knife® surgery is a gentler alternative to traditional brain surgery for illnesses such as metastatic disease – cancer that has traveled to the brain from elsewhere in the body. The system precisely delivers up to thousands of low-intensity radiation beams to one or more targets in a single session. Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion provides even greater speed and ease of use than previous versions, especially for treating multiple metastases.

Supported by three decades of clinical practice in both neurosurgery and radiation oncology departments, more than 50,000 patients each year are treated with Gamma Knife surgery.

KLAS gathers opinions of thousands of healthcare professionals

The KLAS awards are based on data from customer surveys of hospital and clinic executives, administrators, physicians, nurses and other directors and managers interacting with healthcare equipment and infrastructure solutions.

According to KLAS, Best in KLAS designations go to solutions that have excelled in their respective market segments, that show the vendor's leadership in working with customers to resolve issues and match expectations to reality, and that have the broadest operational and clinical impact to healthcare organizations.

"Best in KLAS recognition – which indicates leadership in working with customers to resolve issues and match needs to delivered solutions – is awarded to healthcare vendors who have consistently excelled in their market segment(s)," says Adam Gale, president of KLAS. "We are pleased that the healthcare industry recognizes the value of the 'Best in KLAS' award. The awards in this report help put the aggregate perceptions and opinions of healthcare executives and clinicians into perspective – especially as their peers consider major investment decisions."
