Dynamic Computer Corp. Develops RFID Hand-Washing Application

Company Being Honored for its Technological Advance

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dynamic Computer Corporation (DCC) has developed a hand-washing application for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to reduce the nation’s two million yearly incidences of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The company is being honored at Premier Inc.’s 2010 Innovation Celebration on June 8 in Washington, D.C. as one of 23 innovators selected from a nationwide pool of applicants.

What RFID Hand Washing Does

With RFID technology, clinicians can be required to wash their hands prior to treating a patient in a way that:

  • Encourages a culture of safety by requiring actions to take place in a certain order
  • Provides a mechanism for timely reporting and accountability

Dynamic developed the hand-washing application to address the infection control epidemic in the US healthcare industry that results in 99,000 deaths and costs anywhere from $28 billion to $45 billion in related health care expenses each year.

“Despite the statistics regarding the impact of HAIs, hand hygiene adherence in the best of hospitals is around 50 percent,” said Farida Ali, president and CEO of DCC. “Our solution benefits hospitals seeking to improve patient care while greatly reducing costs.”

How RFID Hand Washing Works

The solution uses infrared radio frequency sensors in soap dispensing units that read staff ID badges and monitor the location and timing of hand hygiene compliance. Staff members are alerted in real time when they forget to wash their hands. After washing their hands, employees hear a verification sound that indicates successful information capture about whom, when and where the hand washing occurred.

Dynamic’s application enables hospitals to accurately track and report on hand hygiene compliance to monitor problem areas and identify additional training where necessary.

Ali added that this technology is particularly timely given the new Medicare law going into effect in July which will make it much more difficult for hospitals to get reimbursed for care given to patients who are readmitted because of an HAI.
