Consortium Health Plans Cuts Down on Power Usage and Cooling in Its Data Center Using ONStor's Green Clustered NAS Solution

CAMPBELL, Calif., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- ONStor Inc., the leading provider of scalable clustered NAS solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Consortium Health Plans, Inc., a national consortium of 19 independently licensed Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans, has chosen the ONStor Bobcat Series NAS Gateway as its database file storage system. Consortium Health Plans chose the ONStor solution based on its low power consumption, space-saving features and ability to adapt and grow with the unpredictably changing demands of its enterprise storage infrastructure.

"We did our research to find the best solution that would meet the evolving needs of our business," said Marcliff Fountaine, Technology Coordinator, Consortium Health Plans. "From our comparative evaluations of ONStor with other vendors, we found that the ONStor solution would be easy to manage and have the ability to meet our future storage needs with minimal financial impact."

As part of its business process, Consortium Health Plans is required to provide large amounts of database information to the Blue Cross Blue Shield System as part of its sales cycle, using Oracle database software as its enterprise data manager. Prior to the ONStor implementation, the storage infrastructure was failing in its ability to support such a large draw on the Oracle system. In addition, the company found that office automation file storage was growing at a rate of 15 percent a year. It needed a system that could accommodate this growth, recognizing that it could be unpredictable and spike at various times during the year. Therefore, Consortium Health Plans needed to implement an entirely new storage system for structured and unstructured data. The company also chose to leverage the virtual server feature of the ONStor to hold compressed images of other servers if needed for disaster recovery. They also plan to consolidate their existing standalone file servers onto the ONStor Bobcat.

"I like the flexibility we have now," says Fountaine. "We can add another NAS head for redundancy and we can grow storage independently through the addition of disk arrays of our choice. This solution also consumes less power compared to what we had before and is more efficient. ONStor has changed our entire storage management system -- for the better."
