Computer Programs and Systems, Inc. EMR System User is First Hospital in Kansas to Receive Stimulus Funds

MOBILE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Computer Programs and Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPSI), a leading provider of healthcare information solutions, today announced that Morton County Health System, located in Elkhart, KS, was the first hospital in the state of Kansas to receive a Medicare incentive payment under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Morton County Health System joins the growing list of CPSI client hospitals that have qualified to receive incentive payments utilizing CPSI’s electronic medical record (EMR) system.

“We are very proud of our long relationship with Morton County Health System and to have supported them in being the first hospital in Kansas to receive a Medicare incentive payment,” said Boyd Douglas, President and Chief Executive Officer of CPSI. “The electronic health record (EHR) incentive program is beginning to reward early adopters and we commend Morton County’s leadership for their boldness and vision in taking on the challenge.”

The facility recently received a payment of over $1.4 million in stimulus funds made available under ARRA, which promotes adoption of EHRs by healthcare providers. In order to qualify, hospitals must be users of an EMR system certified to support the Stage 1 “Meaningful Use” measures adopted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The CPSI EMR System, Version 17, was certified as a Complete EHR by CCHIT, an ONC Authorized Testing and Certification Body in November 2010.

“It is always nice to be first,” said Leonard R. Hernandez, CEO of Morton County Health System. “When we started this process in 2009, we had an idea of what the possible incentive payment could be and set a goal of being among the first hospitals to receive Meaningful Use designation. Projects like this are not accomplished by an individual; it takes a total team effort. Starting with the vision of our Board of Directors and continuing with the support of our physicians, management, and employees, I am extremely proud of our team and wish to thank them for making this possible.”

Hernandez also recognized CPSI’s partnership and support of the system’s efforts in advancing the use of EHRs in their facilities. “They have absolutely been a part of our team and I thank them for their commitment to the project and the future of the Electronic Health Record here at Morton County Health System,” Hernandez continued. “The payments will definitely benefit Morton County Health System and help advance our mission of providing quality healthcare. This makes our community and the patients we serve the ultimate beneficiaries.”

“Our expertise in assisting with the process grows with each customer that applies for and receives Meaningful Use designation,” added Douglas. “CPSI will continue to be proactive in providing assistance to our customers who are intent on receiving stimulus funding.”
