Colorado Hospital Joins 270+ U.S. Hospitals in Collaborative That Has Saved 25,000+ Lives, $2.85+ Billion

Boulder Community Hospital, new member of Premier healthcare alliance QUEST collaborative, working to improve patient experience and reduce mortality, infections and costs

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Boulder Community Hospital has joined more than 270 hospitals across the nation working to improve care delivery in the Premier healthcare alliance QUEST®: High Performing Hospitals collaborative.

In just 30 months of QUEST, members have saved 25,235 lives while reducing costs by $2.85 billion – or enough to pay the salaries of 200,000 primary care physicians. Overall, 63,094 patients have received the high-quality, evidence-based care they deserve.

“We value the relationship we’ve had with Premier over the past four years,” said Paul Lewis, MD, chief medical officer at Boulder Community in Colorado. “The level of success being achieved by hospitals in QUEST is remarkable, and we’re excited to be a part of this collaboration to drive performance improvement and reduce costs.”

QUEST hospitals are increasing adherence to evidence-based care delivery in six critical areas to improve the patient experience and avoid harm while reducing mortality, cost of care and readmissions. Their observed mortality is 5 percent lower than non-participants when compared to what is expected. Furthermore, costs for inpatient care over the course of the project have increased only 4 percent among QUEST hospitals, compared to a national cost increase of 21 percent.

Members are also working to reduce preventable harm by 40 percent and 30-day readmission rates by 20 percent to achieve the reduction goals set forth by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Partnership for Patients program.

Hospitals in QUEST specifically target improvement opportunities, compare themselves against each other, carefully measure progress and share best practices to significantly improve outcomes. They also leverage clinical, financial and operational outcomes data from Premier’s quality, safety and labor tools:

  • QualityAdvisor integrates quality and safety data to help hospitals make better decisions in care delivery for reductions in harm, mortality, readmissions and improved resource utilization. The tool saved members more than $284 million last year.
  • SafetySurveillor® is an automated data application to prevent healthcare-associated infections and optimize antibiotic use. It helps providers protect patients more effectively, avoid Medicare payment penalties under value-based purchasing legislation, and cut costs.
  • OperationsAdvisor® monitors labor productivity and manages supplies through assessments and comparative data that measure performance against peers and national benchmarks, identify improvement opportunities, and achieve a rapid return on investment. Hospitals using the tool saved $120 million in labor and supply costs in last year. Wes Champion, senior vice president of Premier Performance Partners, said, "We welcome Boulder Community Hospital to the collaborative as they continue to focus on quality and cost improvements that support the health of people in their community.”

Premier is hosting a new webinar series, which is free and open to the public, focusing on the six proven metrics, including patient experience, harm, mortality, cost, evidence-based care, and readmissions in QUEST. Additionally, results from the third year of QUEST will be announced within the next two months.
