WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Christiana Care Health System has named James Newman, M.D., the first Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the new Christiana Care Value Institute.

Dr. Newman, a specialist in rheumatology, previously served as Christiana Care’s Chief Medical Officer and Chief Patient Safety Officer. Concurrent with his appointment to lead the Value Institute he has been appointed Christiana Care’s Chief Academic Officer.
“The Christiana Care Value Institute, established in 2011, represents a formal declaration of Christiana Care’s intention to develop, implement and investigate how the patients we serve benefit from the care we provide, with the expectation of better health outcomes and lower costs as a result of our learning,” says Dr. Newman.
A graduate of Cornell University Medical College in 1975, Dr. Newman received his residency training in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1978 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in rheumatology at Yale University Medical Center in 1980. He joined Christiana Care’s Medical-Dental staff that year.
His faculty appointments include lecturer in Internal Medicine at Yale University Medical Center, 1979-1980, and clinical associate in medicine from 1984-1989 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Since 1982, he has been clinical associate professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College.
Dr. Newman has been certified by the American Board of Medicine in Internal Medicine (1978) and by the American Board of Rheumatology (1980 and 1996). He received the Leonard P. Lang, M.D., Outstanding Internist Award in 1997 and the Laureate Award from the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP).
He has served as past governor of the Delaware Chapter of ACP (1992-1996). He is fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and has written numerous articles in professional journals.
