Cedar Hills Hospital Launches “Exclusively Women” Program for Treating Mental Health Issues

Overcoming Fear is the Biggest Hurdle to Getting Help Says One Patient

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cedar Hills Hospital has launched a new program tailored to women with multiple mental health and chemical dependency issues. Exclusively Women is designed for women who are dealing with drug and alcohol dependency, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), spousal abuse, anxiety and obsessive disorders, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, and depressive disorders related to pregnancy. Treatment focuses on crisis stabilization.

Exclusively Women is one of the few programs in the nation to offer women such a broad variety of services within a hospital setting. Cedar Hills Hospital’s newly expanded facility addresses the acute need for mental health and chemical dependency programs for men and women in the greater Portland area.

“The shortage of mental health services in Portland is well documented,” said Mike Sherbun, CEO, Cedar Hills Hospital. “By most estimates, the Portland area continues to have limited capacity for inpatient psychiatric beds, leaving families unable to access care for their loved ones. Cedar Hills Hospital has expanded to serve 78 men and women for inpatient, provide partial-day, and intensive outpatient care. We have the flexibility to dedicate as many clinical staff as needed to the Exclusively Women program.”

Fear is the biggest obstacle to getting treatment says one program participant

One Exclusively Women patient recently spoke about her experience with the Cedar Hills Hospital program. She wishes to remain anonymous, but is forthright about her desire to speak out for other women to get the help they need. She came to Cedar Hills Hospital seeking treatment for multiple presenting issues including trauma related to alcoholism and spousal abuse.

“Fear is the biggest obstacle,” she said. “Getting out [of an abusive relationship] is very fearful. It’s huge. You feel like a prisoner. You don’t know if you are going to live or die. I used alcohol to medicate...and it progressively gets worse. Your whole life becomes unmanageable,” she said.

“I was excited to find out about a women’s program,” she said. “This program was amazing to me. The staff was very caring. All the groups I attended were so informative,” she said.

The programs and therapies that helped her recovery the most included: positive coping skills, mindfulness, grounding, boundary setting, seeking safety, and dealing with grief and loss. “I’d never learned these skills before,” she said. She has been through two other recovery programs elsewhere, but only acquired these new skills after attending Exclusively Women at Cedar Hills Hospital.

What message would she like to send to other women?

“I’d like to see women—who are as afraid as I was—get help,” she said. What motivation does she use to maintain her sobriety? “I’m doing this for myself. I have to do it for myself.” As she transitions from inpatient services, she plans to use Exclusively Women outpatient services, as well as Alcoholics Anonymous, and her new skills to maintain her recovery.

Exclusively Women tailors treatment to meet each woman’s needs

Unlike other programs where “one size fits all”, Cedar Hills Hospital’s Exclusively Women program is individually tailored to each woman. Evidence-based therapies for specific needs such as depression, addiction, self-image, or life skills are utilized within group sessions with other women. Exclusively Women offers a deeper understanding of each patient’s issues with a professional team of psychiatrists, therapists, and 24/7 nursing care.

Open communication between the hospital’s staff and the patient’s doctor allows a seamless transition of the patient to and from traditional outpatient care.
