Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center is part of the health ministry of the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters.
Just last month, the hospital opened a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center. The American Stroke Association also recently recognized Avera McKennan's stroke center for outstanding performance.
In April, the Avera McKennan's laboratory was named Medical Laboratory of the Year for 2010 by Medical Laboratory Observer magazine for its accuracy, efficiency and customer service. And one month earlier, the Avera Cancer Institute won an Outstanding Achievement Award for 2009 from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for meeting the highest standard of care for cancer patients.
Avera McKennan also was recognized for quality patient care and nursing excellence through the Magnet Recognition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Less than 1 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved three consecutive four-year recognitions.
