athenahealth Selected as a Supported Electronic Health Record Vendor for Tri-State Regional Extension Center

Federally designated Regional Extension Center spanning Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana to utilize athenahealth’s web-based electronic health record service to grow adoption of healthcare technology

CINCINNATI & WATERTOWN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of web-based practice management, electronic health record (EHR), and patient communication services to medical groups, today announced that the Tri-State Regional Extension Center, operated by HealthBridge, has selected athenahealth as a supported EHR solution partner to enable more than 1,700 physicians across the states of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana to take advantage of the benefits that athenahealth’s technology can bring to their practices. athenahealth has also launched a guarantee program that assures its services will help doctors across the Tri-State region meet EHR certification requirements for Meaningful Use and qualify for reimbursement funds authorized by the HITECH Act.

“The Tri-State REC evaluated nearly 30 proposals and is pleased to begin a strong collaborative relationship with athena to accelerate EHR adoption in both rural and urban communities served by our REC,” said David Groves, Executive Director, Tri-State Regional Extension Center. “The athenaNet service offers a unique business model for medical practices and the depth and breadth of EHR features that we feel will be frequently sought by physicians striving to achieve meaningful use.”

The most recent version of athenahealth’s EHR, athenaClinicals®, is 2011/2012 compliant and was certified as a Complete EHR on September 30, 2010, by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®), an ONC-ATCB, in accordance with the applicable eligible provider certification criteria adopted by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The 2011/2012 criteria support the Stage 1 meaningful use measures required to qualify eligible providers and hospitals for funding under the ARRA.

athenahealth recently extended the timeframe in which doctors can qualify for its federal stimulus bonus payment guarantee program, which assures that the company’s web-based clinical services will help doctors across the nation meet EHR certification requirements for achieving “Meaningful Use” and thereby qualify for reimbursement funds authorized by the HITECH Act. HHS formally announced the final definition of Meaningful Use on July 13, 2010. With this deadline extension, physicians will now have until June 30, 2011, to participate in the program. “We are excited to partner with HealthBridge and the Tri-State REC as they help to digitize medical offices across three states and allow providers to take part in the approaching HITECH Act. RECs—the Tri-State REC being a prime example—are increasingly looking to athenahealth’s cloud-based EHR service as a more practical way to help physician practices improve healthcare, exchange clinical information, and more easily keep pace with government incentive programs and regulations,” said Jonathan Bush, Chairman and CEO of athenahealth.
