API Healthcare Sponsors New Documentary “NURSES ”

API Healthcare, the leader in healthcare-specific workforce management technology, today announced its sponsorship of the new documentary “NURSES ” Set to debut in Los Angeles on October 11, 2012 during the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) National Magnet Conference, the feature-length documentary showcases the complex and challenging world of nursing.
Over 100 nurses across nine states were interviewed representing the many different roles that nurses have. “There was no scripting or prepping. We showed up with a camera crew and had candid conversations. It’s authentic and real,” said documentary film-maker Kathy Douglas, RN, MHA. Douglas’ inspiration for the film was driven by her belief that a deeper understanding of the role and value of nursing among the public and policymakers will help form a successful future for healthcare in this country. “The film’s title acknowledges the role Florence Nightingale played in the development of the field of nursing.”
Douglas, who serves as chief nursing officer at API Healthcare and president of On Nursing Excellence (ONE), a not-for-profit organization founded to expand the effectiveness, efficiency, well-being and recognition of the healthcare workforce, developed the original idea for the film and discussed it with ONE board members. The group enthusiastically embraced the idea and board member, Karen Kirby, RN MSN, NEA, BC, FACH volunteered to spearhead fundraising and raise over $120,000 to cover production costs.
API Healthcare was one of the first sponsors to come on board. “API Healthcare is committed to providing innovative that drive better patient and financial outcomes through clinician empowerment. This sponsorship enables us to further support our mission,” said Karlene Kerfoot, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, API Healthcare vice president of nursing.
Soon, several dozen , ranging from individual donors to hospitals to industry-affiliated associations, signed up to help fund the film. Many organizations also came forward to assist including The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit that recognizes nursing excellence. According to co-founder and president Bonnie Barnes, “This film will enlighten all who see it as to just how special this profession is. We who are the beneficiaries of their care need to nurture and support nurses in gratitude for all they do for us.”
According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), there are more than 3.1 million registered nurses in the United States. As word about the film began to spread among the nation’s tight-knit nursing community, the project became a reality.
"It's important that people recognize the power of nursing," said ANA president Karen A. Daley, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN. "As more people understand how nurses make a difference in people's lives - that we bring both clinical expertise and leadership skills to every setting, from the bedside to the boardroom - we will see opportunities and demand for nurses continue to grow."
“NURSES ” is dedicated to nurses everywhere for the extraordinary work they do every day and in memory of Joyce C. Clifford, PhD, RN, FAAN for her numerous contributions to the profession.
