ApeniMED NHIN Platform Connects Healthcare Providers to the Social Security Administration

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ApeniMED, a leader in healthcare connectivity, has connected four Midwest healthcare organizations to the Social Security Administration as part of a nationwide project to use electronic medical records to streamline the disability claims process. ApeniMED, formerly known as MEDNET, connected the organizations to the Social Security Administration using the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

The healthcare providers that ApeniMED connected to the Social Security Administration are Marshfield Clinic of Marshfield, Wisconsin and three members of the Minnesota-based HIE-Bridge™ network. Marshfield Clinic, with more than 770 providers and 54 locations in northern, central and western Wisconsin, is one of the largest comprehensive medical systems in the United States. HIE-Bridge is a Health Information Exchange (HIE) managed by the Community Health Information Collaborative (CHIC) of Duluth, MN. The HIE-Bridge member hospitals that are connecting to the Social Security Administration are St. Luke’s in Duluth, MN, FirstLight Health System in Mora, MN, and Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake, MN. Other hospitals in the HIE-Bridge organization will be able to connect to the Social Security Administration when the project is completed this summer.

The ApeniMED NHIN Platform is installed at both Marshfield Clinic and CHIC hospitals, where they will transmit a Continuity of Care Document (CCD) when the Social Security Administration electronically requests information to verify disability claims.

When the project is completed, the ApeniMED NHIN Platform will transmit thousands of electronic medical records for the hospitals each year. Nationwide, the Social Security Administration requests more than 15 million medical records annually as it processes more than 3 million disability claims. Today, these records are sent to the Social Security Administration through the mail or by fax. The $17 million effort to increase the speed and efficiency of this process involves 14 healthcare providers and networks nationwide and is known as Medical Evidence Gathering and Analysis through Health Information Technology (MEGAHIT).
