Anaheim General Hospital is Recertified by CMS to Participate in the Medicare and Medicaid Programs

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Anaheim General Hospital announced today that it has been recertified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and is eligible to participate once again in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

“As far as we know, we are one of only a very few hospitals in the U.S. that have successfully been recertified by CMS after losing their certification,” said Tom Salerno, CEO of Anaheim General Hospital, a general medical and surgical hospital with 142 beds. “Most hospitals facing similar challenges have closed. We have kept our doors open and continued to provide quality care to patients as part of our commitment to this community. Achieving recertification from CMS allows us to resume our full role as a community-based acute care hospital dedicated to serving the medical needs of Anaheim and North Orange County. It’s a new beginning for this hospital.”

The hospital has installed a new leadership team that, since the facility was decertified in July 2009, has worked with survey teams from various regulatory agencies to identify and make the needed changes. These include purchasing new lab equipment, implementing effective clinical and patient safety systems, putting in place new and innovative compliance and performance improvement systems, and implementing a new culture of Accountability, Patient Safety and Compliance.

“Achieving recertification was the No. 1 goal of our new leadership team, and we could not have attained it without the extraordinary dedication and commitment of our physicians, nurses and staff,” Salerno said. “Going through the recertification process has been a challenging but positive experience. It has given us the opportunity to do a top-to-bottom scrub of our operations. The result is a much-improved hospital that will be better able to serve our community for many years to come.”

Anaheim General Hospital officials are actively recruiting new doctors as well as working to bring back doctors who previously practiced at the hospital. “The response from the local medical community has been very encouraging,” said Salerno. The hospital also is hiring additional nurses and other staff to meet the needs of patients as the census increases. Future plans for the hospital also include acquiring new equipment and developing new programs and services.
