American Action Forum polling finds conservatives and majority of independents oppose the healthcare reform plan signed into law this spring
Operation Healthcare Choice Releases Survey Results for Western House Districts
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today the American Action Forum released individual and regional compellation polls conducted by Ayers, McHenry & Associates. The polling was conducted August 23-29, 2010 with 4,000 likely general election voters - 400 voters each in AZ-01, AZ-05, AZ-08, CA-11, CA-47, C0-03, CO-04, NM-01, NV-03, OR-05. All respondents were selected randomly from a list of registered voters in the districts, and indicated they are likely to vote in the elections for Congress this fall, and interviews were conducted by live interviewers.
Key Findings:
Opinions on healthcare reform law reflect whether voters believe the country is heading in the right direction. Overall, Western voters believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction. Only 24 percent felt the U.S. was headed in the right direction, while 68 percent felt it was headed in the wrong direction.
A majority of the likely voters in these districts oppose the healthcare reform plan. Voters oppose the new law by a 53 to 39 percent margin, including 45 percent who strongly oppose it.
Ø The lowest support for the healthcare reform law among Western voters is in the AZ 01 and AZ 08 House districts. Only thirty-one percent of the likely voters in AZ 01 and 35 percent of the likely voters in AZ 08 support the healthcare reform law.
Ø The highest support for the healthcare reform law out of all districts polled was found in OR 05, where voters were split down the middle in their support/opposition to the bill (47 percent in favor, 47 percent opposed).
"The American Action Forum will continue to conduct research to understand the opinions and attitudes of the American people. The polling to date has been helpful in learning what public concerns policymakers need to address. As in the Midwest and East Coast polling, these results show that healthcare remains an important policy issue," said Senator Norm Coleman, CEO of the American Action Forum.
"These results are additional evidence that the majority of Americans firmly believe the recent healthcare reform is a step in the wrong direction. The challenge remains to craft center-right policies that voters want, including higher quality care at lower cost, while extending affordable insurance options," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the President of the Forum.
