, today announced that the Alion Council on Accreditation has awarded its Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) accreditation to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), an academic medical center in Omaha, Nebraska affiliated with the University of Nebraska.

The HRPP accreditation is a process that reviews the practices of organizations involved with research that involves human subjects and measures a program’s compliance to Alion’s comprehensive set of standards. Alion HRPP Accreditation Services is a commercial outgrowth of similar work the company has been providing to the U.S. federal government.

Programs at UNMC accredited by Alion encompass both academic and clinical units. Academic units of UNMC include the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the School of Allied Health Professions, Graduate Medical Education and several research institutes. Clinical facilities include the Nebraska Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center and other hospitals. UNMC has strong research programs in the areas of cancer, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, infections disease, genetics, drug development and nanomedicine, and rural and other health disparities.

UNMC was accredited because of their excellent policies, procedures and practices for protecting human subjects and its commitment to high ethical standards and regulatory compliance in research, according to Stephen Crawford, Alion HRPP Accreditation Services Executive Director. The Alion Council on Accreditation also recognized two Exemplary Practices of UNMC, the exceptional leadership of the Institutional Official (Alion Standard #1) and the excellent policies and procedures for reviewing, developing and utilizing specimen and data repositories (Alion Standard #28).

Crawford said, “UNMC’s achievement of Alion HRPP Accreditation is a testament to the sophistication of their research program. Among other notable accomplishments, UNMC has paired Alion HRPP Accreditation with their selection as one of only 14 DoD-sponsored University Affiliated Research Centers. That combination allows them to deliver a unique and enviable offering.”

Alion launched its accreditation services in June, 2013 due to overwhelming interest in its innovative HRPP accreditation program and progressive Standards. The Alion HRPP Accreditation program features experienced staff, a client-friendly philosophy and a flexible yet rigorous accreditation process.
