Affordable Preventive Care Available for Men, says Californians for Patient Care

Men’s Health Month a reminder that men, regardless of insurance coverage, can get the preventive care they need

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- All men, regardless of their health insurance coverage, can find various affordable preventive care options in California, according to Californians for Patient Care, an independent nonprofit that connects consumers to affordable care. The importance of preventive care for men is being underscored as June is recognized as Men’s Health Month.

Statistics gathered by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that women are 100 percent more likely to visit the doctor for an annual examination and preventive services than men. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death and are the victims of more than 92 percent of all workplace deaths.

“There are some shocking realities about men’s health that seem to be going largely unnoticed,” said Carmella Gutierrez, president of Californians for Patient Care. “We encourage men to take charge of their health, by assessing their risk for chronic diseases, getting the preventive care they need, and consistently undergoing appropriate screenings, to ensure that they will live longer, healthier lives.” This type of care is affordable and accessible thanks to a vast network of low-cost and no-cost healthcare resources across the state – and Californians for Patient Care can help men find those resources through its MyHealthResource online guide.

People can access MHR, the state’s most comprehensive online guide of affordable resources by clicking on the blue button at www.calpatientcare.org. After typing in basic search information such as city or county and category of resource, Californians can find a comprehensive list of local healthcare providers that provide primary, dental and mental healthcare services to the uninsured and underinsured.

Along with information on local healthcare service providers, Californians for Patient Care also provides information on chronic disease management, how to shop for health insurance, information on new research studies and links to helpful organizations and websites.

“With all of the compelling data which indicate that men’s health could substantially improve, we are optimistic that men in California will take charge of their health by using available healthcare resources in their communities,” said Gutierrez. “Regardless of financial circumstances, there are care options available. Making good use of these resources can only improve their health and their subsequent quality of life.”
