Advocate Health Care among hospitals blocking new area rival

Advocate Health Care in Oak Brook, Ill., Mercy Health System in Janesville, Wis., and Sherman Health in Elgin, Ill., are all challenging the 2016 opening of a would-be rival hospital by Centegra Health System, the Northwest Herald reported. Advocate Health Care, Mercy Health System and Sherman Health filed separate requests asking the state to review Will County Court's approval to build the $233 million, 128-bed hospital in Huntley, Ill. The complaining health systems argue that the new hospital is unnecessary and would duplicate services in the area.

However, Centegra Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning Susan Milford said the services are needed. "It is surprising and extremely disappointing that Advocate, Mercy and Sherman have chosen to tell the people in Huntley and the surrounding southern McHenry and northern Kane county communities that they don't deserve a hospital in their growing area," Milford said.
